Program Rationale

The Master of Arts in English is designed to produce graduates who can meet the demands and future challenges in the dynamic field of English language. Through this program the students will be engaged in the process of critical thinking as they do their course work and will likewise give them a comprehensive knowledge of the language and its relevance in different fields such as business, education, history, mass media, and information technology in response to global communication which uses English as the medium.

English as a field of study

Students who have enough knowledge of the English language can concentrate more on meaning (comprehension) rather than form (grammar). Therefore, students who embark on this course should have adequate background in the various macro skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing to enable them to fully and actively participate in the activities outside and inside the classroom using the English language.

. Speaking measures their ability to verbalize their thoughts in English. Students should be able to express themselves using appropriate vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structure that fit the contexts.

. Listening measures their ability to understand English as it is spoken. Students should be able to comprehend the main ideas and supporting details and to make inferences.

. Reading measures their ability to understand texts on any subject. Students should be able to scan and skim through various texts with a high degree of comprehension.

. Writing measures their ability to use language that is appropriate for standard written English. Students should be able to logically organize ideas in their writing using various cohesive devices.
